The Curtis Bay Ore Pier in Baltimore, with CSX as owner and Ramsay, Scarlett as stevedore, is a modern bulk facility capable of handling all types of ores and other dry bulk materials. Cargo can be transferred between oceangoing vessels or barges and rail cars or trucks.
From Curtis Bay, inbound cargo is moved to inland points or into storage adjacent to the pier for subsequent distribution. The Ore Pier is located adjacent to the Chesapeake Bay Coal Piers, from which an ample supply of empty rail equipment is made available for import bulk cargo shipments.
Bulk materials can also be accumulated at Curtis Bay for outbound loading onto vessels or barges. Acreage is available
to accommodate multiple shipload quantities. The pier's two high-capacity electric ore cranes can discharge cargo in two ways: through the conveyor/scale hopper system into rail cars or trucks or directly into ground storage behind the cranes. For flexibility, these two systems can be
used at the same time.
